A Level Results and University

Morning Peeps!

I’m going to do a series on University/College so I am beginning with What To Do If You Didn’t Get The Grades You Need. (I know it’s Saturday and I’m talking about education, but if you know any panic-stricken teens, please pass this on to them.)

If you got the results you wanted, Congrats! I’ll be talking to you over the next couple of weeks about starting uni and setting up home.

If you didn’t get the results you needed; congrats anyway. You’ve worked long and hard to get here and (results or not) you are now part of the clan of school-finishers.

There are 3 things you can do if you didn’t get the grades you need for your next level of training and none of them involve panicking:

  1. Contact Your University/College: They may have a conditional offer for you, a deferral to next year (so you can re-sit exams) or a clearing process to fill any leftover places. If you don’t ask, you won’t know.
  2. Find A Different University: You may be able to find a Uni with a similar course that has fewer entry requirements, this may be one of your 2nd choices or it may be one you hadn’t thought of; if it’s the latter you may have to go through option one with them.
  3. Find A Different Course: This can come in any number of forms… You could re-sit A level (or equivalent) courses at the place you just left or an adult education centre. There may be an Access Course or Foundation Course available, these are usually 1 year to prepare you for the next level by improving your numeracy, literacy, and something specific to the course. Lastly, there could be an entirely different course, job or experience that could keep you engaged for a year and give you skills that would benefit your long-term plans.

All of the above may be done through UCAS, so don’t be afraid to ask them to help if you need it.

I hope I’ve encouraged the students out there and helped you take some practical steps towards the future.

Good Luck, God Bless

PS Feel free to have a good laugh at me and Mr.B in our student days 😉 20989087_331423450641915_4403167953434327175_o
