Have you ever looked at something and asked yourself why? Why do we do this? Why is that socially acceptable? Just Why?…. Yeah, me too.
My latest bugbear is all the tech stuff in my life….Don’t get me wrong, I love the fact that I can talk to people on the other side of the world and look up facts when I need them, but there are a few things that are mysterious to me…..
- Tickets: Why do we have e-tickets? It terrifies me… I have the responsibility of printing my own tickets to the zoo, cinema or even for a flight(!) (which also means having enough ink in the printer……don’t wanna do that mad dash to the stationery store again; I speak from experience!) I was happier when they were official-looking bits of card posted to me or bought on the day. (And what child wants to stick a bit of paper in their scrapbook, we want proper tickets!) Lee Evans does a brilliant (but slightly rude) sketch about budget airways where they get you to do all the printing and bag weighing yourself…he says something about practically working for them! He has a point.
- Speaking ‘Assistants’: Siri, Cortana, Google, Alexa and anyone else who think they have realistic voices…. I know I’m in the minority with this, even in my own household; Teenager often asks Siri stuff rather than type and Mr. B couldn’t function without his Google calendar. I have a phone with this capability and I genuinely never think to use it, I’ll always type…I’m not saying it’s better or worse, I just never think of it. Mr. B wants one of those Amazon Echo things too, I can see how it would help him but I was worried it listens all the time (nothing to hide, just find it creepy) but actually they’ve thought of that and have a mute button….I am warming to the idea, especially for use in the kitchen when cooking.
- Mobile Apps that only work when you have Wi-Fi or use your credit: I understand from a business point of view and I get why this is needed for streaming YouTube videos, but why put it on a kids game or a fitness app when they are going to run around rural areas with bad signals?? Makes no sense when you can use so many offline. Also, it makes people check their phones even more….
The irony of all these is that I’m guilty! I do all these things and more, but they do freak me out a little (especially the thought of losing bits of paper I’ve printed!)
Thanks for listening, (No, not you Cortana)…. I feel better now 😉

Have a great Saturday peeps. x
